How High Should You Mount Your TV?

The ideal TV mounting height depends on three main factors: your TV's screen size, how far you sit from the screen, and the height of your seating. The goal is to position the center of the screen near your natural seated eye level, which minimizes neck strain and provides the most comfortable viewing experience over long periods.

For most living rooms with a standard couch (seat height around 18 inches), the center of the TV should land between 42 and 48 inches from the floor. This means the bottom edge of a 65" TV would be about 26–32 inches up. If you're mounting above a fireplace or higher on the wall, a tilting mount is strongly recommended to angle the screen down toward your seating position and reduce glare.

Reclined viewing — such as from a recliner or bed — shifts the optimal height lower because your eye level drops. Our calculator accounts for this automatically. Once you know the right height, use our TV Size Calculator to confirm you have the right screen size for your viewing distance, or check exact screen dimensions with the Screen Size Calculator.
