Understanding Screen Sizes, Pixel Density & Viewing Distance

Screen size is measured diagonally — from one corner to the opposite corner. But the diagonal alone doesn't tell you the width and height, which depend on the aspect ratio. A 65" TV in 16:9 has different dimensions than a 65" ultrawide in 21:9.

Pixel density (PPI) matters just as much as size. A 65" 1080p TV has about 34 PPI — you'll see individual pixels from closer than 8.5 feet. The same size in 4K jumps to 68 PPI, looking sharp from just 4 feet away. Our PPI quality matrix below shows exactly which resolution you need for your screen size and viewing distance.

Use the comparison tool to overlay two screen sizes — invaluable when deciding between sizes. Then check our TV Size Calculator for room-specific recommendations, or our Projector Throw Calculator to plan projector placement.
