How to Choose the Right TV Size

Choosing the right TV size comes down to your viewing distance and resolution. The distance between your seating and the screen determines how large the TV should be for the best experience. Too small and you miss details; too large and you may see pixels or feel overwhelmed.

Viewing Angle Standards: THX vs SMPTE

The THX standard recommends a minimum 36° viewing angle for a cinematic experience — this means the TV should cover at least 36° of your field of vision. SMPTE (the professional broadcast standard) recommends a minimum of 30°. Most living rooms land around 20-30°, which is comfortable but not cinematic. Our calculator shows you exactly where your setup falls.

Resolution Makes a Difference

With 4K TVs, you can sit much closer without seeing pixels. This means 4K lets you go larger for the same distance — or sit closer to the same size screen. For most living rooms (8-12 ft) with 4K, a 65" to 75" TV is ideal. Bedrooms (6-8 ft) work well with 50"-55". For dedicated theaters at 12+ ft, consider 75" or larger — or explore a projector with our Projector Throw Calculator.
